Bone Grafting

Why would an individual need bone grafting?

  • To rebuild bone that was previously lost
  • To facilitate a more ideal restoration

Reasons for bone loss:

  • Long standing missing teeth
  • Gum (gingivitis) and bone (periodontitis) loss
  • Dental extraction
  • Trauma
  • Cysts, tumors, cancer

Why is bone loss a problem?

  • Implants require a certain width and height of bone for placement
  • Bone loss can invade other structures such as nerves, sinuses and other vital structures making implant placement or other procedures difficult
  • Bone loss can lead to an ill-fitting prosthesis such as dentures

What is bone grafting?

  • Maintaining bone volume or rebuilding gums and the underlying bone structure using a variety of techniques
    • Sinus lift
    • Guided bone regeneration
    • Socket preservation at the time of dental extraction

Where does the graft material come from?

  • Allograft (same species):
    • In some cases, bone from a bone bank (from another human) can be used to reconstruct and build up bone
    • The cells are removed leaving a crystalline structure and treated so that it is safe to use
  • Autograft (yourself):
    • In some cases, bone is harvested from the following areas and transplanted in your mouth
      • jaw
      • hip
      • knee
      • gums
  • Xenograft (different species):
    • Bone is obtained from another species (cow) to reconstruct and build bone
    • The cells are removed leaving a crystalline structure and treated so that it is safe to use
